10/9 FTB Unleashed - release the mobs!
Expanded my hilltop town, battlements all around. Good for temples and such. Then I saw a great town site off in the distance: a long coastal plain surrounded by extreme hills, with 2 chasms running thru the middle of it all. -21,+64. Lots of room to expand. Plus as a landmark, a large tree growing out of a 1x2 floating pair of dirt blocks. I should be able to connect the two sites by a short coastal road, and the expanse between is a perfect start to a tree farm.
After dinner: I built that coastal road, along cliffs, around the bend and across to new town site. Cheated a heap of stone walls to fence in the place. Nice and scenic having that chasm thru the middle, with my bridge over chasm gated and walls running from coast to coast, this should be a nice secure zone. Framed out two quick buildings in cobble and did an initial run down into chasm.
I think I have enough of a start on the world that I can turn on mobs. Yes I start as a bit of a wimp. While I enjoy the game, there's no reason to make it more time-consuming than it already is. Once I have a foothold somewhere, I let the dogs out.
Run back to hilltop town, thru creepers and blue slimes. Wouldn't you know it, that totem platform spawns will-o-wisps! So my temple area is now an unsafe mess. I was thinking of Thaumcrafting it into oblivion, but the instability is already there. Okay I guess. Grabbed most of my ores from first shack, ran back to new town. Will call new town Binghamton, for laughs. Tunnelled down under chasm, first haul: spoils bag dropped by a skeleton (open it up: 2 force mitts, oak wood, steel leggings, 6 coal coke, steel shovel), ores (64+13 Fe, 5 Cu, 24 Au, 15 Sn, 1 cinnabar, 2 Al), oreberry bushes (1 Al, 1 Essence), Shards (1 Earth, 7 air), 10 force gems, 40 coal, 1 concentrated essence berry ("tastes like creeper"), 5 arrows.
Good batch!
Another expedition, down to lava lake: 36 coal, 2 emeralds, 31 sulfur, 18 force gems, ores (22 Fe, 10 Pb, 6 Ag, 2 Al, 2 ferrous), 6 diamonds, 64+54 redstone, 4 earth shards, tin oreberry bush. Ow, the oreberry bushes cause damage if you bump em. This has the mod that rings lava lakes with sulfur, haven't seen that in a while! Much better sulfur ore placement.
Last run of the night. Yikes, right next to lava was one of those hard stone blocks that spawns bugs. That's an extra hazard! Haul: 57 sulfur, 7 force gems, 3 uranium, 5 earth shards, 64+64+5 redstone; ores (1 cinnabar, 15 Au, 14 Fe, 8 Pb, 1 Ag, 8 Monazit).
Town site seems reasonably secure, no mobs intruding.
Feels like a good start, now I can get creative and industrial.
