FTB Ultimate (Quickhaven) 6/14 - thauming around
6/14
Big gaming party, mostly stacks of board games and some crazy card games. On computer in other room I showed new player (AJHart) my industrial town, my thaumcraft research table, spawner/grinder room, all kinds of fun stuff. Then fermius came in and I gave part of the tour again - funny since he was one of the guys (the other was DasPenguin85) who got me into Minecraft years ago, now he never plays. Then I has AJHart log in as himself so I could guide him to the safe village area. And wouldn't you know it, his very first spawn in the world was way high up in a redwood tree. We could see my little spawn area safe house way down below. We had to step down one tree level at a time -- couldn't even break leaves due to the spawn area protection -- then finally take a 4-heart crash landing to reach the ground. From there it was into the safe house, down to the tunnel, run over and pop out in town. I assigned him an empty house in the village next to the enchanting lounge and we finally have a new potential player on board.
Then more wild gaming. Bananagram (fun fast-paced scrabble type game), cards (B.S., I won easily, nobody can out-b.s. me at cards), more cards (spoons, old guy not fast enough to beat college kids), and when we left there was a table full of guys trying to figure out who was the spy. I have no idea what that last game was.
Midnight, back home, quick check-in. Thaumcraft note: during my earlier tour, I threw down some dirt and clicked to show how the research table worked, and got an immediate hit on the Solum aspect, then whatever I was researching hit a match for praecantatio, then it turned out I stumbled upon the Unified Thaumic Field Theory; then Cognito was a match but with 3 aspects at 100% I was still at only 40% overall. Left it on the table to complete when I got home, so I could add it to my notes. I just found the 4th aspect (ignis) and wow, who knew the research diagram supports more than 4 aspects? Still only at 53%. Add Aqua, Aura ... use all the different types of shards, makes sense now. Then the icons for tempus and mutatio appeared at the center, for tempus I burned through two clocks but got to keep my 3rd clock. It's now 83% complete, just need mutatio, which my notes say I can use netherwart for. Brb with netherwart ... done. Discovery. Then I had to move my infusion altar downstairs next to my cauldron -- yes you can break it up with a pick, it reverts to magical blocks, which you can reassemble and r-click with your wand and poof, it's an infusion altar again. Upgraded my apprentice wand (holds 50 vis) to a Wand of the Adept (holds 250 vis) on the infusion altar. It took one of each elemental shard plus my old wand plu 16 Preacantatio brewing in a newarby cauldron, PLUS a second wand to power it! I had to run across to old wiz tower for my other wand, ran back and the recipe was still ready to go. Presto. Wand of the adept. Fun system.
I wonder what I can discover next. Back up top to research table, throw on some dirt, immediate hit on solum; a few more tries, Machina hits, use nikolite to hit 100% ... revealed: I'm researching the Arcane Levitator. Air shards seem like a logical choice, both motus and aura hit. Ran out of air shard but luckily there was a patch of yellow-infused stone marking the stairs up to my thaum tree from the tunnel below. More air shards, completed aura and motus, then volito appeared. Flight. I can use some of my spare drone bees for that. Funny, I could just go back into the tunnel , pop out at the twilight house, grab drones from the hive out front and come back thru tunnels. Arcane Levitator discovered.
Next, put netherrack on research table. immediate hit on research but no aspects come up until after I burned through 9 blocks, then ignis and saxum hit ... research revealed: Infernal furnace. Cool, that was one of the few thaum things I was really interested in. Those two aspects hit 100% (cost 20 netherrack), overall research at 50%. Let's see, heat and flame, let's try fire shards next. yes, praecantatio (magic aspect) is a hit, 100% costs 7 shards. Overall research still only 62%. these are obviously getting much harder and more expensive to research, well coded. Netherwart no, torch no, copper no, brains no. Maybe something mechanical? All out of nikolite, run to get some. tried many other things, finally string ... vinculum (to bind) works. The research text really does give subtle clues. In this case, "... Blazes seem like they would make perfect sources of heat, if only the can be harnessed properly." Ran out of string, back to town, pulverize 20 wool for 40 string + 10 bonus string, never had a reason to try that recipe before. Vinculum done, then animus and imperito pop up. I've never even seen animus (a little white ghost) before, have no idea where to find it. Checking inventory, my safari net (of all things!) contains Animus and a new aspect I'd never seen before -- Alienus (eldritch, the End). So maybe it's ender pearls I need? Wait. Crud. I bet it wants ghast tears for that!! Yes, they wach have 4 animus. I've seen that little Imperito icon once before, like a little mannequin, but where? Check my stockpile, the xycraft fabricator has 2 imperito, still ahs 2, moistener has 4 ... too expensive ... got it, pipe waterproof has 1 imperito (and no other aspects), weird but cheap, let's go back and try it. Imperito done (01:38), cost 10 pipe waterproof. The animus component cost 6 ghast tears, research done (01:40).
Finally, check the Thaumonomicon. An infernal furnace is a multiblock machine made of:

R-click with your wand, and it turns into a really odd thing. Nicely textured, with a blazing face behind the bars. Sure enough, if you drop items in the top it spits the cooked items out the front. I catch them with an obsidian pipe and they go into a chest. It spits out lots of little embers too. Very well done. Also spews out experience orbs, and extra nuggets of meat (25 beef gave 25 steaks + 8 nuggets so it's about 1 in 3). No way to r-click and see all its recipes. Definitely handles common ores and dusts to single ingots, cooks meat, clay to bricks, cobble to stone, sand to glass, logs to charcoal, etc. Here's a neat one: 4 cinnabar ore to 4 quicksilver + 3 quicksilver drops (9 drops = 1 quicksilver). Blaze in a cage will bake potatoes. Cactus to cactus green, slime to resin, soul sand to corrupted essence. Unrecognized item (like tracks, mushrooms, saplings, glowstone dust, ruby ore, netherrack, coal, wheat) seem to just be devoured. No clue about how much flux this released. Maybe I shouldn't have built it in the middle of my town?
