Intro / Day 1

Hi.  This blog is planned as a companion to my Minecraft adventures as posted on YouTube.  I've spent a scary amount of time learning the details of the game, and its many fascinating mods.  Figured it was worth sharing some ideas, survival tips, demystifying some of the complex mechanical stuff.

Anyway, here is episode 1, the obligatory "first night in Minecraft":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDapSaLfx0g

It's a bit ominous when the first sound you hear is your legs breaking as you hit the bottom of a pit.  But the overall survival tips are:
- try to get 8 to 10 logs by punching trees
- find a hillside or rock face you can dig into, that will be your little cave home for night one
- whack a few animals if you see them; chickens, cows and pigs will drop meat you can cook and eat, while sheep will drop wool, which you can make a bed out of

What are those logs for?  Wood is essential for making tools and torches, without which your chance of survival is pretty much nil.  A good and efficient use of your first logs:

1. turn one log into 4 wood, craft that into a crafting table
2. turn one log into 4 wood, and 2 of those wood into sticks, make a wooden pickaxe, dig 8 pieces of cobblestone
3. turn cobblestone into a furnace, then use your remaining sticks to cook 2 or 3 logs into charcoal
4. turn one more log into wood, then into sticks, you should now be able to make 8 or 12 torches

You now have LIGHT.  Very important.  You can now dig yourself a hole in the wall, light it, block off the outside world, and survive your first night.  You will probably spend this first night digging, down in a stair pattern.  Look for coal and iron.  Those are crucial.  You can make some stone tools if you need to, but as soon as you start getting iron, cook it to make better tools and your first armor.

Enjoy the video.  It's not an easy start, and then I crawl out of the hole only to find myself in one of the most hostile of environments, where there's no safety at night.

As for this blog, I'm sure it will branch out in all kinds of directions, considering how many worlds I've worked on, and how many mods there are to talk about.  I will try to tag them so you can find what you need, but expect some beginner stuff and some advanced stuff to string together into a mass that I hope you find helpful.
