I really enjoy making the videos describing in-game logic and experiences. Don't like the sound of my voice, and it has been all scratchy and worn-out lately. Flu season I guess. Anyway, here are two videos from my "basics" series:

You can actually make a surprising amount of stuff from just cobblestone ...
Mining safety tips
Some simple procedures to stop you from getting lost and blown up. My two big guidelines for going into caves:
1. block off unexplored passages to limit how many directions you might get attacked from
2. put all torches on the right walls going down into a tunnel or maze, then to find your way out just follow the path where all torches are on the left side. Works like a charm, evern in real life.
Also, early in the game, avoid really wide caves with lots of openings. Once you have good armor, you can tackle those more dangerous situations that you can't block off quickly. Narrow tunnels can often be barred with only 3 blocks of cobble, while you pick one area clean of ore and coal ... safely. Then break your barrier, move a little deeper in, and block off the passage ahead again. Just work a little at a time, and all bad guys (except spiders that don't do much damage) can only stand there behind the barricade and watch.
