Quickhaven updated 4/6 to 4/8
Scattered bits of time, but settlement is growing ...
4/7
I expanded my settlement (Quickhaven) stone walls again, about another 16 blocks out in each direction. Lots of torches. The plan is for all roads between building to be 5 blocks wide (1 row of road surrounded by two of dirt), and for the building plots to be about 10x10 each. Added building #4, future Redpower lab. Dumped all my nikolite and redstone in a chest there. Expanded out on shelf over ocean, about a 15x15 spot of new sand, framed by roads, surrounded by cobble walls - should be super safe from mobs out there. Started 5th building, about 10x15: future IC2 power station. Using the XyCraft Glass Viewers instead of windows, looks more futuristic and seamless.
Got fed up not finding the ores I need, went through two more quartz picks, finally thrashed my diamond pick. So I made a mining turtle and sent it out into a non-mobbed non-lava (according to radar map) section at level 15. It left hallways just lined with one ore after another but still NO GOLD.
Radar map showed about 40 green mobs just beyond the wall of my original steps down (which I replaced with stairs for speed). A few quick digs into the left wall hit one cave after another, got mobbed every time, sealed it up and marked DANGER.
Also made a few sulfur torches, fairly bright, occasional sulfur goo, as advertised.
Finally found 8 gold next to a lava pond on level 12 after three full loads of ores & cobble from the mining turtle. So I ran up top, made the inert stone (needs that one gold in the middle), plus the 8 minium shards for a minium stone (EE3). Then converted one diamond to 4 gold, for 11 gold total. Planning to build the first few machines: needed 2 gold for 2 RRCoils, will try to make a pulverizer & a powered furnace. Needed more wood, ran to village. Over there, Rutt had fenced in the cows & chickens and moved into a house, filled another house with stockpile.
8pm: Rutt and Iceman are playing. Got my first tiny bit of industry up & running: Pulverizer & Powered Furnace running off a Stirling engine. Doubled & cooked a load of iron. So slow! So I added a second engine. Made some bronze (for forestry machine frames). Rutt came by to run some iron. We're so used to having these helpers, we felt like cavemen without 'em. Converted some logs to obsidian (minium stone) so Rutt could start the Enchanting Lounge over in the village.

Back. Woo hoo, pulverizing 13 copper gave 3 free gold dust. Yikes, how are there 145 pages of Pulverizer recipes?? Game has gone mad. Eats up a lot of coal, though. Need to work on some other engines. There are some pools of oil in the area, but I still loathe the combustion engine.
Experiment: made two xychorium soil blocks, put outside door, planted corn on them. A little hard to keep the recipes straight: xy gems (xychorium) cook to xy bars (xychoridite); xy bars in corners around stone bricks = xy bricks; but xy bars with redstone in center = engineering bricks. Xy bricks can convert back to xy bars, but lose the stone bricks. Cute names, but dude ... they're going to be xy gems and xy bars to me.
Fun activity: wait for a heap of skeletons & zombies to spawn at night in desert, sleep it off, wake up and go collect all the arrows & bones & brains. Went on a wood run, but it's all giant trees out there. Barely 2-3 fps in those woods, 7-8 in haven. The guys must be spooling something from netflix?
13:37 - Boy the xy soil doesn't seem to speed up corn much. Still just a nub.
Checking the wiki, those weird rubber trees are from the Minefactory Reloaded mod. Reading up about that mod, it has some fun things. I don't need the animal breeder, weird syringes and all, but the Fisher and (mob) Grinder sound useful. Cooked some rubber bar to get raw plastic, made plastic sheets, made a few factory blocks, made a Fisher - pretty easy.
00:30 the corn on the xy soil are still just nubs??
IC2 lab - made the first generator of this new world. Moving along slowly but surely.
00:42 setup the Fisher: stirling engine -> fisher -> chest. Sure powers up slowly. Speeds up as the engine speeds up. Okay it says 800 MJ per fish, test it out. Drop in some coal & flip lever, and get fish. 00:53 roughly 9 minutes for 9 coal, and got 9 fish.
Gotta run. Quantum mechanics before bed.

4/8
Quick visit at lunch. Walled off those two pools at edge of town, one is planned to be a peat bog. Corn on xy soil has only reached stage 2 after over an hour, add another xy soil block under each one. Made quartz grindstone - cute, it takes about 6 cranks to process each block. Harvested one big tree I planted in forest = 30 logs, plus plant 3 more saplings ... endless supply.
Made a Forge Lexicon. Sneak-click to open it, converts items as expected. Too bad the little Xy Quartz (useless) can't be turned into the bigger quartz crystals or dust.
8 minutes with mining turtle on level 12: 137 redstone, 53 nikolite, 8 earth shards, 2 fire shards, 2 cinnabar ore, 5 emeralds, 2 small quartz, 3 rubies, 1o silver ore, 4 ferrous ore, 6 lead ore, 4 iron ore, 4 sapphire, 10 aluminum ore, 17 blue xy, 18 white xy, 3x64 cobble -- full load but NO coal.
15 minutes with mining turtle at level 54: 13 copper ore, 13 iron ore, 9 aluminum ore, 7 tin ore; 2 amber, 6 ruby, 9 emerald, 4 sapphire, 7 big quartz, 10 quartz dust, 3 earth shards, 1 uranium, 28 green xy, 13 red xy, 29 dark xy, 75 coal (yay!), 381 cobble, 17 dirt.
EVENING (very tired)
Chopped my rubber tree, planted seedling outside fence along road. Hit with bonemeal, spawn & chop a few trees.
IC2 lab, added roof, then Batbox, generator, geothermal generator -> compressor, extractor. Ran down to get 6 lava cells from bottom of my mine.
Thermal Expansion lab, added sawmill, processed all my rubber wood, get 150 wood (burned about 40 in engines since I'm outta coal again), and 13 sticky resin (finally) ... into extractor: yay, 42 normal black rubber!
Also added some pressure plates so I stop leaving gates open. (Duh)
