Quickhaven 4/24 to 4/26 - energy links
4/24
Busy day, no chance to play until after 8pm. Rutt is playing, running around Twilight Forest. Head down to start clearing space for a settlement. In about an hour we had two houses, about 24 plots of IC2 crops, and I expanded the fenced-in area to about 60x40. Andy came by briefly and picked a giant mushroom clump to build his neew glass fortress on. Some good teamwork.
Later, overworld, Rutt was waiting for some ore to cook, so i went to show him the big lava tank at the bottom of the world. Holy cow, it was FULL, 288 buckets. And the pipes were all blocked up with more trying to pump in there. I ended up in two trips running 90 cans of lava up top. Maybe I need a second thermal generator up there! then we ran out of sand (in the middle of the desert) so (duh) I sent out the mining turtle to hack up a nearby sandy hill. Tunnel 20, turn right, tunnel 4, turn right, tunnel 20. It had 5 stacks of sand and sandstone in no time.
Time to focus on my TO DO list. Take 15 gold -> 60 gold wire. Rubber run, hack & replant 11 trees: 73 rubber wood (ultimately 96 rubber and lots of extras with 9 logs left over), 73 drops. Igneous Extruder made about 16 stacks of stone, set it back to obsidian for a while. 3 cans of biomass ready (why so slow?). MFSU at 9.5M. 23:49 - got 60 2xIns gold wire, start powerlines. 23:57 - powerline runs under rim of 2nd floor roof of Center Shop, across to roof of railcraft lab, hangs a left and goes into Ore Processing dead center of south wall between ast & 2nd floors. Trying to plan it out ... let MV go into PowerConverter to Factorization charge on 2nd floor, run LVX down to first floor, replace stirling engines with 2 electrical engines. 22 gold cable left, so that was 38 blocks total. Fairly compact for potentially powering 3 buildings - and a quick 2 blocks across the street could power the top floor of my HQ someday.
Interesting bit of slightly scary power management: I installed an Energy Link above ore processing lab with IC2 MV consumer and BC producer. Did nothing at first, showed 0 in, 0 out, then I figured I needed a wooden conductive pipe to take energy out. Ran fine for a few seconds, wild numbers like 120 EU in, 57 MJ/t out ... and one of the stone conductive pipes blew up. Small explosion, didn't hurt any machines. Redid it using Redstone Energy Conduits, which of course meant building a new Magma Crucible and adding it to the Liquid Lab next to the unused Liquid Transposer. made just enough, hooked em up and it ran fine. What's happening there? Outputting to Buildcraft, it just pulls in all the EU it can, converts it to MJ, and overloads the pipes. With the resdtone energy conduits, they ask the machines the maximum power they need at the moment, get that, the Energy Link draws just enough EU to supply it, and when the machines are done it all shuts down, no EU power drawn -- and the machines stay at full charge, full speed. Wow. Excellent. Looks like the same Energy Link can also have a Factorization Producer attached to it, and it will properly balance all ins and outs. Really super detailed coding.
Anyway, while I was at it I excavated a basement (more heaps of sand for future use), and ran down to get 46 lava cans from my Lava Tank. MFSU was down to 8.8M, was at 10M at one point. Probably the constant draw in the liquid lab and some minutes of heavy testing in Ore Processing, loading every machine. Anyway, 725mB molten redstone, make 12 more conduits, call it a night.

Fun pre-dinner session with Rutt giving R (age 8) the grand tour of our towns, showing her how to feed chickens and make popcorn, and of course chasing off all the bad guys. Faucher came by for supplies, then headed down to Twilight to work on his mushroom glass house. I showed Rutt how to refill the Thermal generator - just run downstairs with some empty cans, over 250 buckets of lava waiting to be burned.
After Elementary ... 00:50 - hop to nether Base Camp, build a 4x4x4 xycraft tank (capacity 1024 buckets) down by my lava lake grab site. Setup pumps, now pumping REALLY endless lava for future use. I plan to put link books from here to a power station in Twilight. Skip all biomass/biofuel pain-in-the-butt stuff, just go with nether lava for fuel. Okay, pumps working, clear out. Darn, i was going to nab those few nether ores on my way up to link books, but two piggies had spawned up there. 01:08 - quick trip to Twilight for clay from the river, found 94 clay balls. radar shows about 2 dozen mobs out there, but must all be in the flooded cave below. Quick mining run found ores (10 light xy, 6 green xy, 6 diamond, 9 nik, 2 U, 5 W, 5 Al, 2 blue xy, 8 sapphire, 2 redstone, 3 Fe), a bounty in under 10 minutes. head back to overworld.
01:16 - start on some Factorization machines to hook up to Energy Link. Don't need the diamond block to make solar turbine. Just needed clay blocks & lead. Make 4 insulated coils, 16 lead wire, SO4 (water bottle, 2 gunpowder, 1 coal), then battery block (So4, 4 lead, 4 iron), then magnet. Cool. The magnet recipe gave me a magnet but doubled my 7 lead wire and battery block, on the autocrafting table, handy bug to know! But then it wouldn't make another magnet (the two battery blocks now show "20% charged", not enough to make a magnet), and I lost one lead wire somewhere in all my clicking. Anyway, magnet + 4 coils + 2 Pb + 2 Fe = motor. 5 Fe = fan. fan + motor + 7 glass is the solar turbine. Surround with 4 gold to get a Factorization Producer I can hook up to my Energy Link. I wonder if the lead wire can take the strain.
01:32 - Okay I hooked up a battery by lead wire to the Factorization (FZ according to the Energy Link) Producer, no explosion. Also says 0 power output. And darn, the Grinder, the ONE machine I really wanted, is the one that needs the diamond cutting head, which needs the block of diamond blown up in a Craftpacket maker/stamper. The crystallizer is cheap but it needs a heater, which needs 6 coils, which each need a clay block & 8 lead. Ugh. Compressing a diamond block, make 4 coils and a charge meter, will continue tomorrow. Unplug the FZ Producer for now. Make craftpacket maker & stamper, don't remember how to use them. Stash all parts in a new chest upstairs. Done for night.
